Nice to have: cotton swabs and pipe cleaners for the corners, and silicone cleaning plugs so you can shake a rig without wearing it.

How to clean a dab rig, step by step

• Empty it out

  Dump the old water and give the whole piece a quick rinse with warm water. Not hot. A sudden temperature swing is one of the easier ways to crack good glass.

• Add alcohol and salt

  Pour in enough isopropyl to cover the dirty areas, then add a generous spoon of coarse salt. The alcohol dissolves the resin and the salt does the physical scrubbing in the places your hands will never reach.

• Shake it

  Plug every opening and shake for thirty to sixty seconds. This is where the actual cleaning happens, so be thorough rather than gentle.

• Soak if it needs it

  Badly stained pieces can sit for ten to thirty minutes before a second shake. Small parts like bangers and caps go in a zip bag with the same mix.

• Rinse properly

  Warm water, and keep going until there is no alcohol smell and no visible residue anywhere. This is the step people rush, and it is the reason a freshly cleaned rig sometimes tastes worse than a dirty one.

• Dry and refill

  Air dry or wipe it down, then refill with fresh water. Distilled water if you want the cleanest possible taste.

Cleaning a banger or quartz nail

The banger is where flavor lives or dies, and it is the part people neglect the most.

• Swab it with a cotton bud while it is still warm, right after every dab. Thirty seconds now saves a twenty minute soak later.
• If it is already stained, soak it in isopropyl for twenty to thirty minutes and then swab again.
• Chalky white spots are usually mineral buildup rather than resin. A short soak in warm water with a little citric acid lifts them where alcohol will not.

Cleaning a Puffco or other electronic rig

Electronic rigs follow different rules entirely. No shaking, no soaking, and nothing goes in a bag.

• Never submerge the base or the chamber. Both contain electronics, and the chamber has contacts on its underside that talk to the base.
• Swab the chamber interior with a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl after each session, while it is still warm.
