Ask anyone how to clean a bong and you get a recipe: isopropyl, coarse salt, shake, rinse. That part is fine. What nobody mentions is that the recipe only works on the parts of the glass it can reach, and on a one piece bong that leaves the joint, the bend under the mouthpiece and the inside of the perc more or less on their own. Cleaning advice is mostly about chemistry. The real problem is geometry.
The short answer
The easiest bong to clean is one that comes apart. When the base, the stack and the mouthpiece separate, every section is a short open tube you can soak, brush and see through, instead of one long closed shape you shake and hope. Why one piece glass gets dirty and stays dirty
A standard bong is blown as one continuous piece. Resin collects wherever smoke slows down or changes direction, which means the joint, the bottom of the downstem, the top of the chamber and any perc. Those are exactly the places a bottle brush does not bend into. So you soak it, the easy surfaces come clean, and the hard ones build up a little more every week until the whole piece looks tired and tastes worse.
The honest fix on a one piece bong is to clean it more often, before anything sets. The easier fix is to not need the brush to turn corners at all.
What modular actually means
A modular water pipe is built in sections that seat into each other. Take it apart and you are holding a base, a stack and a mouthpiece, each open at both ends. Every surface is reachable. You can see through each piece to check it is clean, and each section fits in a sink rather than needing a bucket.
There is a second benefit people only appreciate the first time they knock one over. If a section breaks, you replace that section. On a one piece bong, a cracked neck is the end of the bong.

Nothing is permanently joined, so every glass part soaks on its own, and the weighted base keeps it upright on a table and absorbs the knock when it goes over anyway. The trade you make
Modular is not free. More sections means more joins, and a join is somewhere to seat carefully so it does not leak. How to clean a modular bong
Separate the sections and empty the water. Drop each section into a zip bag or a container with isopropyl and a spoonful of coarse salt, shake, and let the smaller pieces soak for a few minutes. Brush anything still marked, rinse with warm water and let every section dry before it goes back together. Doing it once a week takes five minutes. Leaving it a month takes an afternoon.
