The short answer
Get the Medium 4 piece unless you have a reason not to. It is the everyday size, it catches kief, and it is the one most people end up happy with. Pick the three piece only if you know you will never use the kief and you want the fastest grinder to clean. Go Small if it lives in a pocket, Large if you grind for more than one person, and Jumbo only if you are genuinely working through volume.
What the fourth piece actually does
A three piece grinder is a lid, a grinding chamber and a base. What you grind falls into one chamber and you scoop it out. A four piece adds a mesh screen under the teeth and a catch chamber below that, so the fine trichomes sift through while you grind and collect at the bottom. That is kief, and a four piece gathers it without you doing anything.
The trade is cleaning and height. The screen is one more surface to get sticky, and the extra chamber makes the grinder taller. On the Santa Cruz Large, the three piece stands 1 3/4 inches and the four piece 2 inches at the same diameter.
Who should buy the three piece
Honestly, a lot of people buy a four piece and never once empty the kief chamber. If that sounds like you, the three piece is the better tool. Everything comes back out of one chamber, there is no screen to clog, and the Large 3 piece has a base shaped so you can scoop the load out with a fingertip instead of tapping it against the table. It is also the quickest of the range to clean.

Who should buy the four piece
Anyone who likes the idea of the kief building up for later, which is most people once they have had a full chamber of it. The four piece also keeps the grind itself slightly cleaner, since the finest dust drops through the screen instead of sitting in with the flower. Every size in the range comes as a four piece, from Small to Jumbo.
Which size
This is the decision that changes how the grinder feels to use every day.
- Small 4 piece: 1 5/8 inches across, 19 teeth. The one that travels. Fiddly for more than a bowl or two at a time.
- Medium 4 piece: 2 1/8 inches, 27 teeth. Big enough to stop being fiddly, small enough to stay off the countertop. The default.
- Split Tone Medium: the same Medium in a matte two tone finish with side engraving. The matte holds fewer fingerprints and gives the wall more grip.
- Large 4 piece: 2 3/4 inches, 36 teeth. Clears a bigger load in fewer turns.
- Large 3 piece: the same 2 3/4 inches and 36 teeth, no screen, one deeper chamber.
- Jumbo 4 piece: four inches across. For filling cones in batches or prepping for a room. It does not travel. Also between shipments online, so call first.
The jump from Small to Medium matters more than Medium to Large, because it is the point where you stop having to grind in two goes. If you are torn between two sizes, go with the bigger one. Nobody has ever complained that a grinder held too much.
