The right grind changes everything about how your flower smokes: the burn, the airflow, the flavor, and how harsh it hits. Here's how to match your grind to how you're actually smoking it.
Go coarse for bongs and pipes, medium for joints and blunts, and fine for dry herb vapes. When in doubt, medium is the safe all-rounder. Too fine and you choke the airflow; too coarse and it burns uneven.

Big chunky pieces
Barely broken up. Slow, cool burn with maximum airflow. Some prefer it for pipes and dry bowls.
Rough, open grind
Great airflow and a slow, smooth burn. The go-to for bongs, water pipes, and hand pipes.
The all-rounder
Even, balanced texture that burns cleanly and rolls easily. The safe default for joints and blunts.
Small, even particles
More surface area for even heating. Best for dry herb vaporizers and tightly packed slow burners.
Nearly a powder
Maximum extraction in a vape, but pack it loose. Too dense and it chokes airflow and burns harsh.

Airflow
Coarser grinds breathe. Fine grinds pack tight and restrict the draw, which is great in a vape and rough in a bong.
Burn rate
Finer burns faster and hotter, coarser burns slower and cooler. It's the single biggest lever on how long your bowl lasts.
Extraction
More surface area pulls more out of the flower. That's why vapes love a fine grind and why a coarse vape bowl underperforms.
Harshness
Too fine and too hot gets harsh and scratchy. An even, appropriate grind keeps the smoke smoother and the flavor cleaner.

Grinding everything the same
The grind that's perfect for your vape will choke your bong. Adjust it to what you're smoking, not out of habit.
Going too fine for a joint
Powder-fine flower packs dense, blocks airflow, and gives you a tight, harsh draw. Medium rolls and burns better.
Too coarse for a vape
Big chunks heat unevenly, so you waste flower and get weak, patchy draws. Vapes want a fine, even grind.
An uneven grind
A mix of dust and chunks burns unevenly no matter the method. Consistency matters as much as the size itself.

What grind is best for a dry herb vape?
A fine grind. The extra surface area lets the vape heat the flower evenly for fuller, more efficient extraction. Just keep it evenly ground and don't overpack the chamber.
What grind is best for a bong or pipe?
A coarser grind. It keeps airflow open so you don't pull bits through, and it burns slower and cooler for a smoother hit. Medium works too if that's what you have.
Can a grind be too fine?
Yes. Powder-fine flower packs dense and restricts airflow, which makes a joint or bowl draw tight and burn harsh. Very fine is really only ideal for vaporizers, and even then you pack it loosely.
How do I change my grind size?
