Hand Pipes and Spoons
Hand pipes · Venice, CA
A hand pipe is the one that goes in a pocket, and that changes what matters about it. Weight in the hand, whether the bowl is deep enough to be worth packing, and whether it survives being put down on a table. Everything else is taste.
Astral Project makes the outlier of the collection. Their gemstone spoon pipes and gemstone hand pipes are cut from actual stone rather than blown, so each one is a different piece of rock and none of them look alike. They take screens, which is the part everyone forgets until they need one.
MJ Arsenal covers the engineered end with the Alpine Series in borosilicate and milled black walnut: the Base Camp, the Creek and the Granby spoon. Human Grade is the honest everyday glass, the Rainbow spoon, the Fleur and the Corkscrew.
Then the ones with a sense of humour. Hemper blows the object rather than printing it on a tube, so there is a ramen bowl, a robot, an arcade cabinet, a candle and the Trippy Shroom. BigFUN! runs the sweet shop angle with ice cream, the Lollipipe and the Pipesicle. Empire Glassworks works every piece by hand, so the Great Barrier Reef, the sprinkle donut and the lady bugs arrive slightly different from the photo every time.
Two more worth knowing. Softglass builds in glass and silicone rather than glass alone, which is the answer if you have dropped one before, and the Journey Pipe is fully enclosed, so nothing spills in a bag. Edie Parker sits at the design end entirely.
Through October there is also MJ Arsenal's Halloween run: the Bud-Sucker, a bat spoon with a glow in the dark face, and the Jack O'Ripper, a pumpkin that runs a cone through water. All six pieces from that drop are in the Halloween glass write-up. The whole run sits in the Halloween collection.
Want water filtration instead? That is bongs and water pipes, and we wrote up how to choose between a beaker and a straight tube if you are weighing that up. Everything here is on the shelf at 1321 Venice Blvd. Worth handling a few before you pick one, and we are open till midnight every day.
